USI’s Health Administration major prepares you in, what is often described as, the “hidden” side of healthcare. Medical care is provided by clinicians, but behind these providers are administrators who serve to design a work environment that allows the providers to work both efficiently and effectively. As a health care administrator, you’ll be a leader in an ever-changing, complex healthcare environment. You’ll work with other healthcare professionals to assure that patients receive top quality, safe, and effective healthcare. In order to manage efficient and effective departments or healthcare organizations, a background in management principles, finance, healthcare marketing, policy, quality, ethics and informatics is necessary. The health administration degree at USI helps you understand these topics as well as healthcare financing, the role of government and other agencies in healthcare delivery, the impact of technology and many other complexities of healthcare organizations. You’ll have an opportunity to do experiential learning in an internship that will provide you with real-world experience and allow you to understand the network of services available to the population while seeing leaders in action.
All students complete a culminating experience which includes taking a professionalism course (3 credit hours) and an experiential learning opportunity. The experiential learning opportunity has three options: Health Professions Capstone (3 credit hours), Internship (3 credit hours) or a two semester Administrator-in-Training (AIT) residency (12 credit hours). If a student chooses the AIT option, the major credit hour total is 66.

There is no application process to declare the Bachelor of Science Health Administration (BSHA) major. Students may declare the major upon entering the university or complete a change of major form at any point in time.
Once in the BSHA program, students will be required complete the prerequisite courses and achieve a 2.75 GPA prior to the start of an internship or Administrator-In-Training (AIT) opportunity.
Graduates of USI's health administration program have an outstanding job placement record and an almost perfect acceptance rate to graduate school. Health care administrators can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, group medical practices, physician offices, and home health and outpatient centers. The range of opportunities may start with managing a small office or department expanding to several departments or organizations. Graduates of the program have been employed in a variety of positions.
