At USI, you will learn the skills necessary to become an effective teacher of English. The English teaching minor is for students who are majoring in another content area that leads to licensure, but wish to add English as an additional area they can teach (grades 6-12). Good cognates with the English teaching minor are history and foreign languages. At USI, you will have the opportunity to work in an NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) accredited program with faculty trained and experienced in education. Other advantages include extensive content-based knowledge, relevant workshops, and professionalization training, including teaching demos and interviews. Small class sizes, with under 25 students, cater to individuals who seek one-on-one interactions with faculty and mentors. The program is also nationally accredited by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation).
Additional credit hours could indicate a major, second minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
USI’s teaching program has a good placement rate with local and area schools. The program also has a 100% pass rate on the Indiana licensure examination. As with any minor, having this additional minor will make you more versatile and thus more marketable. This minor will also serve as a source of personal enrichment. As a graduate of this program, you will understand the major socio-historical contexts informing the study of American/British literature, understand the distinctions between major literary genres, develop as an emerging professional with skills and habits of mind that will help you achieve success in further study in the discipline and you will become a multi-dimensional reader, thinker, and writer. In turn, you will transfer that passion and those skills to your students.
