New Harmony Book Award Residency Information and Requirements

Requirements

The winner of the NHBA will be required to be in-residence in New Harmony, Indiana, for 7 days, preferably sometime between May 15th – July 15th of 2026 (we will work with the writer to best accommodate their schedule). The writer will also be required to give a public reading in New Harmony during their residency.

Residency Information

New Harmony is located 25 miles northwest of Evansville, Indiana, and is situated on the banks of the Wabash River.

The writer will be lodged in the James A. Sanders Scholar’s Retreat (346 Granary Street, New Harmony, IN). The home was built circa 1814 by the Harmonists and is part of the New Harmony Historic District, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

The Sanders Scholar's Retreat has 3 bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washer and dryer. Bed linens and towels are supplied. Families are welcome, however, only service animals are allowed in the Scholar’s Retreat.

In addition to your $750 travel stipend, we will cover the lodging costs and provide travel to and from the Evansville Airport, if necessary, and to and from Evansville for groceries or other necessities. All food and meals will be the writer's responsibility.

Further details will be provided to the writer upon award notification.
