Student Leaders-Get to Know Brinley Willner, President of USI Speaking Eagles Toastmasters

Shout out to our student organization leaders! Today, get to know Brinley Willner, a junior Computer Information Systems major, who is president of USI Speaking Eagles Toastmasters.

Brinley headshotWhy did you choose USI and the Romain College of Business and what makes them special to you?
I chose USI because it’s close to home, and I had heard good things from my friend who also attended USI and the Romain College of Business.

What are some of your favorite classes or experiences at Romain College?
Right now, I really enjoy Legal Environment of Business, learning about the law is very interesting to me.

Why did you choose your current major?
Tech industry jobs are set to grow faster than most other industries. A CIS degree could afford me greater career opportunities.

What has surprised you about college?
Not a thing!

What are some of your favorite spots on campus and why?
I like the B&E building where most of my classes are. The library great room upstairs is also cool.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? What do you wish someone had told you?
Get involved! College isn’t just about going to class, but it’s also about making professional and personal connections. Join clubs, attend meetings, talk to your professors, and have fun!

What made you decide to pursue being president of Toastmasters?
I like to think that I have a talent, or at least I’m not allergic to, public speaking. I could help other students get over their fear of public speaking and to give them advice on how to become a better speaker.

Tell us more about USI Speaking Eagles Toastmasters and why USI students should get involved with it!
Toastmasters International is a nationwide organization that helps to develop public speaking skills. Communication is one of the top “soft” skills that employers look for in a candidate. Speaking in front of others and speaking with purpose will help you get through presentations, interviews, and will help you become more confident in yourself and your ability to let others know who you are.

What are your career goals?
Currently I’d like to pursue the Data Science aspect of CIS.

Fun fact about you:
I’m a wannabe professional snowboarder.
