Honors Courses

Honors Courses

Honors courses encourage deeper inquiry and creative, interactive learning. Students explore material in greater detail and benefit from smaller class sizes and more faculty interaction.

Honors students take one extra credit—a one-credit Honors 129 seminar that counts toward graduation. Otherwise, they take the same number of courses as other students but in more challenging and stimulating classes.

Three Types of Honors Courses

Stand-Alone Honors Courses: Only open to Honors students, these classes have smaller sizes, more interaction, and more challenging coursework.

Cross-Listed Contract Courses: Listed twice in the schedule, these courses include both Honors and non-Honors students. Honors students complete the regular syllabus plus an extra Honors component, usually designed by the professor. No contract form is needed.

Contract Courses: If a course is not offered as stand-alone or cross-listed, a student may add an Honors component by creating an Honors contract with the professor. The student is responsible for both the regular syllabus and the Honors project. Students should approach professors within the first two weeks. Contracts are allowed for any degree course except 1-credit classes and 100-level language courses (which require department chair approval).

Students complete an Honors Contract Form or Honors Capstone Form to earn Honors credit.
