Empowering Medical Forensic Practice: Trauma, Teamwork and Transformation

The Indiana SANE Training Project, a program of the Southwest Indiana AHEC at the University of Southern Indiana, invites you to join us for two dynamic days designed to support and advance medical forensic practice for nurses and multidisciplinary teams. Through presentations by national experts, this event will explore critical topics impacting patient care and professional collaboration, including the neurobiology of trauma, strategies for effective teamwork in healthcare, and the psychological and societal impacts of pornography. Additionally, attendees will receive the latest practice updates relevant to Indiana medical forensic nurses and their teams. Through presentations, interactive discussions and practical insights, participants will enhance their knowledge and skills to improve outcomes for patients and communities.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the summit, attendees will be able to:

describe how trauma affects brain structure and function
define how trauma influences patient behavior and recovery
integrate communication and collaboration techniques to enhance team performance and patient outcomes in healthcare settings
examine the psychological, social, and relational consequences of pornography use
identify implications of pornography use for patient care and education
assess the benefits and potential challenges of using humor as a tool to build resilience
strategize how humor can help maintain professional balance in nursing practice

These objectives promote understanding, practical application, and critical analysis to foster a comprehensive learning experience.

Speakers

Jim Hopper, Ph.D.

Dr. Jim Hopper is an independent consultant and Teaching Associate in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. For over 30 years Dr. Hopper’s research, clinical and consulting work has focused on the psychological and biological effects of sexual assault and other traumas. Dr. Hopper works clinically with adults who have experienced assault or were abused as children, and he consults and teaches nationally and internationally to therapists, investigators, prosecutors, judges, victim advocates, and higher education administrators.

Renee Thompson, DNP, RN, FAAN, CSP

Dr. Renee Thompson is the CEO & Founder of the Healthy Workforce Institute and works with healthcare organizations to cultivate a professional workforce by addressing bullying and incivility. In 2022, Renee was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing for her work to eradicate disruptive behaviors in healthcare.

Russell and Myra Strand

Russell W. Strand, co-owner of Strand Squared Solutions LLC (Strand²) and a retired US Army CID Senior Federal Special Agent and Sexual Harassment & Assault Response & Prevention (SHARP) Program Manager, Lead Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), victim advocate, and Violence Prevention Program Manager and retired Chief of the Behavioral Sciences Education & Training Division for the US Army Military Police School. Myra Strand, MA, CA, co-owner and Advocacy Diplomat at Strand². Myra is a Certified Comprehensive Victim Intervention Specialist: Advanced.

Nancy Norton, RN, CHP

Nancy Norton, RN, CHP (Certified Humor Professional) is an award winning comedian and keynote speaker. Nurse Nancy’s presentations are funny, engaging, interactive experiences based on evidenced based studies about the benefits of therapeutic humor, backed-up with the anecdotal evidence presented with funny, fast-paced, storytelling.

Contact Hours

The University of Southern Indiana designates this activity for 13.25 contact hours. CE hours will be available for Nurses, Physicians, Pharmacists, Social Workers, and Health Facility Administrators. CE hours will also be available for Indiana licensed Marriage & Family Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants, and Dental professionals.
