Food and Nutrition

The USI Food and Nutrition program offers three high-demand concentrations: Dietetics, Food Service Management and Nutrition and Wellness. Our graduates are prepared for career success with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities using advanced nutrition technology in our state-of-the-art kitchens, food science lab and counseling and assessment simulation rooms

At the completion of the Food and Nutrition Program, our graduates will be able to:

  • Evaluate the role of nutrition in optimizing health throughout the lifecycle and respond to harmful nutrition practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of nutrition as it applies to food service, dietetics and wellness.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to apply management principles to nutrition and food service.
  • Present and evaluate food and nutrition education programs to a variety of audiences.
  • Assess the role that behavior, economics, and dietary supplements have on planning and eating healthy diets.
  • Demonstrate basic food preparation and presentation skills.
  • Apply food science knowledge.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills in food service, dietetics and wellness.

Typically, 100% of USI Dietetics graduates are accepted into internships (national average is 65%).

After completion of the internship program, the graduate is eligible to take the national registration exam to become a Registered Dietitian (RD).

Since the program started in 2001, 88% of all USI Dietetics graduates who have taken the RD exam have passed within one year following first attempt.

The University of Southern Indiana is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Estimated additional costs for the Food and Nutrition program include uniforms, equipment, lab fees, exam fees, physical examination and immunizations and total approximately $350 for the duration of the program.
