Mission and Vision
The faculty of the department of World Languages and Cultures is committed to providing students with language skills and cultural knowledge for professional and academic careers in the 21st century. We foster and strengthen communication among widely diverse constituencies at home and abroad through outreach programs, sustained partnerships and international study. As language-sensitive and language-functional citizens, we foster respect for others.
Learning Outcomes
- Students function in the target language at the advanced low ACTFL proficiency level.
- Students develop ACTFL cultural skill and content knowledge to understand, analyzing. and interpreting artifacts of target culture.
- Students foster and strengthen communication among widely diverse constituencies at home and abroad through outreach, sustained partnership, and international study.
- Students develop the skills to allow them to teach a second language.
World Languages and Cultures Department Student Goals:
- Develop fluency in French, German, Japanese and Spanish, and/or pursue a major or minor in Anthropology, and/or pursue a major or minor in Global Studies.
- Explore world cultures through film, business, food, music, literature, and art.
- Secure jobs in highly competitive global markets. Increase marketability with professional certifications in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Cultural Awareness Training (CAT).
- Benefit from native or near-native language tutors, study abroad, field study and internships.
- Participate in events and clubs, including High School Language Bowl, language clubs; Alpha Mu Gamma (National Language Honor Society), International Food Expo, Holiday Sing-Along, Columbus Day Concert, Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead, ethnic food & cooking, language & culture fairs, Multilingual Poetry Readings; scholarly lectures, International Film Festivals, career workshops.
