Harmonist Bake Oven

Where the community baked their bread together.

Harmonist Bake Oven

Next to David Lenz House at 324 North Street

Built: Reconstructed 1980 (represents Harmonist-era communal oven)
Original Use: Communal baking
Architecture: Frame construction, reconstructed based on historical evidence

Located beside the David Lenz House, this bake oven represents an essential feature of Harmonist communal life. During the Harmonist era, each household had a stove for heating and cooking but not for baking. Baking was conducted communally, and each family had a specific day of the week when they could bake all their breads and pastries.

This oven is not an original Harmonist creation but was reconstructed in 1980 and is used for specialty programs. The oven can hold 20 loaves of bread.

Access: Open. Used during special educational programs and some guided tours.
