Murphy Auditorium

Built for performances and lectures—still hosting them today.

Murphy Auditorium

419 Tavern Street

Built: 1913
Original Use: Community auditorium for lectures, concerts and performances
Architecture: Three-story Neoclassical brick building designed by architect John W. Gaddis

In 1911, the Working Men's Institute (WMI) purchased the lot to the east, which was the site of the former Harmonist School No. 11. This building was demolished in 1913 to make way for an auditorium. With funding from the late Dr. Edward [and Sophia] Murphy Fund, the WMI commissioned architect John W. Gaddis to design the Murphy Auditorium. For many years, the auditorium hosted lectures, concerts, theatrical productions and conferences for the townspeople.

In the mid-1970s, Historic New Harmony, Inc. selected Indianapolis architect Earl Swensson to work on renovating the space. Today, as a University of Southern Indiana property, Murphy Auditorium continues its original mission to inform, educate and provide entertainment. It remains a popular and comfortable facility available for concerts, lectures, performances and educational programs.

Access: Open for events and programs. Check our events calendar for upcoming performances and presentations.
