Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic medical sonography, also called ultrasound, is the science of using sound waves to create a diagnostic image to investigate an illness, injury or possible treatment of a disease. A sonographer works under the direction of a physician to perform sonographic examinations of many parts of the human body.

The USI Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program is one of only 16 Bachelor of Science programs in the United States accredited in Abdominal-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vascular and Adult Cardiac sonography. Our program is the only Bachelor of Science sonography program in Indiana accredited in these specialty areas.

The campus sonography lab includes state-of-the-art equipment, including 3D ultrasound imaging. Students complete nearly 2,000 hours of clinical education, learning to perform exams in the emergency room, surgical suite and outpatient settings.

Programmatic accreditation allows USI DMS students to complete national certification exams prior to graduation.

Since 2007, every graduate of the USI DMS program has been successfully employed in the field of sonography within a year of graduation.

USI DMS graduates have a 96% 5-year average overall pass rate on national certification examinations administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at the University of Southern Indiana is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) in Abdominal-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vascular and Adult Cardiac concentrations.

Key Program Personnel

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program at the University of Southern Indiana provides a curriculum which includes didactic courses in conjunction with laboratory and clinical experiences.

The goal of the DMS program is to prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the Abdominal Sonography-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography, Vascular Sonography and Adult Cardiac Sonography concentrations.

The DMS curriculum consists of:

  • 1 1/2 years of prerequisite general education courses
  • 1 1/2 years of abdominal and OBGYN sonography course work
  • 1 year of EITHER vascular sonography or adult cardiac sonography course work

Completion of these four years results in a Bachelor of Science degree. The student will be eligible to apply for credentialing examinations administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

Prerequisite Courses and Degree Requirements

All new and transfer students must complete the prerequisite courses PRIOR to submitting application for admission. Refer to the DMS Curriculum Plan for prerequisite courses and degree requirements. The prerequisite courses must be completed with a "C" or better.
